Practical Skills for Art Direction: The Moving Image

Branding

Icescape is an ice cream shop and cafe that sells desserts based on the season. Its building is accomodating to both escaping a heatwave in the summer and finding a warm place to have a drink in the winter.

Logo

The shape theory for the branding consists of a mixture of soft and sharp-angled shapes, representing balance and also the shapes of the foods that are sold in Icescape.

Colour palette

The Icescape brand could be described with words such as refreshing, lively and oasis-like therefore I wanted these qualities to be reflected in the colour palette as well. When creating this colour palette, I have tried to select colours that are present in summer fruits in order to reflect the lively aspect of the branding, and the toned-down and greyscale colours are meant to represent the city where the venue is located.

Shape theory

The shape theory for this brand would mostly combine sharp edges with rounded overall shapes, each of these shapes is meant to create a distinct meaning depending on the context. This image is meant to illustrate the thought process behind the shapes chosen and how they would interact visually.

Style

The style of this venue and its branding would closely resemble the brutalist style.

Target Audience

The target audience of this brand is both local residents and tourists that are seeking an escape from the hot weather and heatwaves. The building is placed close to a central bus/train station, and it is relatively in the shadow. Therefore, this brings a wide range of audiences to engage with the brand.

When it comes to the brand personality, it would be most fitting to the explorer and lover archetype as the service mainly focuses on trying new flavours and also indulgence in sweet food and coffee. One way in which this would affect the design aspect of the brand is what tone of language to use and also the style of any design – whether it will be more serious or playful, for example.

Hard Surface Modelling

I have tried to create a sundae glass which has a more elegant shape, however errors have been made which resulted in the stem and bottom of the glass looking scratchy and jagged. This is an example of an object which I discarded later due to the fact it did not fit the branding style, however it shows the development of skills in 3D.

When attempting to UV unwrap and image texture this box, I have made the amateur mistake of not properly setting the seams and instead using the default box “cross” shape to apply the design to. The image above has proved that this in fact did not work out. My solution to this has been to start from scratch and try to UV unwrap it correctly this time.

I have utilised the boolean modifier in order to create the vents on the ice cream machine/freezer instead of using the knife tool because it is easier to modify later on, and it keeps the topology in a neat condition.

Lighting

The main intention of this advertisement is meant to be encouraging new customers to try the new flavours that Icescape is offering on a seasonal basis, thereforeI have attempted to make the lighting reflect that. I have also tried to emulate the bright studio lighting that is often present in advertisements for desserts. One way in which I have achieved this is through applying the default Blender sky background instead of a specific HDRI due to the fact that most of them did not have this specific lighting I was trying to find.

The animation is supposed to act as a showcase for the new products that Icescape is offering. Originally, I have attempted to make the ice cream machine actually create a swirl ice cream, however the curve modifier did not work properly – in the future, if I were to create this effect, I would make sure that it is the first object that is added to the Blend file, and that it is in the center due to the fact that the curve modifier can be unreliable if the position is different.
